Numeracy is one of those important foundational skills taught in the kindergarten classroom. I have teamed up with Kindergarten Smorgasboard, Teacher Laura, and A is for Apples to talk about strategies for numeracy in the Kindergarten classroom.
Move it! Move it!
As a lower elementary teacher, you know that in order to help kids learn tough concepts, YOU GOTTA GET THEM MOVIN! Here are some sure fire tips to get kids moving in math class.
1. Countercise!
Get kids moving with a few stretches and exercises. Add counting and skip counting to your exercise and you have a got a fun way to warm up those bodies and brains before starting math.
*Count to ten for each stretch or exercise. 1-10 stretch a leg, 11-20, stretch your arm, and so on.
2. Play Games
Playing games can help get the extra wiggles out and can help reinforce concepts taught in math. Melissa from First Grade Smiles wrote a fantastic post on ideas to help kinesthetic learners.
The students hold a number and they count in a whisper tone until they get the number they are “skipping” to and then they shout and jump up. This can be adjusted in kindergarten when teaching to count by 10’s and 5’s.
Harry Kindergarten resources have become a staple in my classroom. His videos are a fantastic way to help the non-musical teacher bring music into the classroom. Seriously y’all… You DO NOT want to hear me sing… but I LOVE music in my classroom.
Harry Kindergarten gets kids up and moving while they are singing and counting. You can find some of his videos on YouTube. I know many schools have blocked YouTube videos…No worries! Pete Harry just opened up a TeachersPayTeachers store. You can now purchase and download his videos to put on your smart board. I personally think downloading the video is the best option. This alleviates the worries of shady ads on YouTube and guards that precious classroom instruction time.
